It’s been a tough winter for us. The record low temperatures caused us to change the way we had to do a few things. No matter how high we turn up the heat in the greenhouses, -30 degree temperatures still mean it’s cold. One way we combat it is to keep the plants in much smaller pots than normal, so that we can fit more of them onto our heated benches. It’s an extra step for us, as normally they would have been replanted already into sale-sized containers, but it keeps them alive. It was a winter of much higher costs and a much increased work-load. No matter what technology we bring in, the nature of our business, and that of all farmers, means that we will always have to deal with whatever Mother Nature throws at us.
