Well, we have to admit it. It’s fall. While the season has many joys – colours, smells, harvests, family gatherings and much more, it’s also the time we start to think about putting our gardens to bed for the winter.
There are a few things that should be done soon.
- Adding compost or manure to your flower beds in the fall is ideal as the winter freeze breaks it down into your soil, saving you the work digging it in next spring.
- You’ll also want to bring in any plants you want to keep over the winter in the house. Check everything for pests and then bring them indoors before they freeze. Tropical plants especially need to be moved indoors.
- Now it the time to dig up tender bulbs such as dahlia, canna and gladiola. Store them over the winter in a cool, dark space.
- Plant perennials. Fall is the perfect time to do this. Not only are there great sales at Greenway, the soil is still warm enough to allow the roots to establish before the deep freeze.
One thing you don’t have to do though is prune all of your plants back. Consider leaving ornamental grasses, shrubs and perennial herbs such as sage full-size. Their shapes, when covered with snow, add depth and texture to your gardens – and seed heads can provide food for wild birds. When in doubt on what you should do to get ready for the winter, drop into Greenway and ask one of our sales associates!
Fall is also the time for decorating. It seems to kick off our desire to deck our houses out with glorious colour, shapes and texture. Greenway has so many ways to help your house shine in time for Thanksgiving. Think not only mums, but beautiful fall baskets with mums, grasses, ornamental peppers, flowering kale. We also have corn stalks, bales of straw, colourful gourds, fall grasses, shrubs with coloured foliage and berries – and so much more. Decorate now and enjoy it for a couple of months – until it’s time to put up the Christmas lights. Enjoy!
While corn stalks and bales of straw are always a fun choice for fall decorating, why not look at a perennial vine for a different look? A perennial vine will be brilliantly coloured every fall, saving you the need to annually decorate. Add in a couple of perennial fall planters and you’re all set for years to come.
Flowering or Ornamental Kale is one of the most under-rated plants for stunning fall colour. A relative of traditional edible kale, and a member of the cabbage family, flowering kale provides ruffled beauty to gardens, baskets, and containers. Available in a range of colours from purples to pinks to white and green, kale can be planted at any time of year in your baskets or gardens and will be stunning come September.
